Vilnius: Lithuanian intelligence services stated that the recent assault on Russian opposition figure Leonid Volkov, a close associate of the late Alexei Navalny, was likely organized by Russia.

The attack occurred in Lithuania's capital Vilnius, where Volkov was struck with a hammer outside his home. He was briefly hospitalized after sustaining injuries.

President Gitanas Nauseda remarked that potential involvement of Moscow should not be surprising, emphasizing Lithuania's resilience against Russian President Vladimir Putin's influence.

The assault on Volkov follows Navalny's death and precedes upcoming elections in Russia. Lithuanian authorities are investigating the incident, with suspicions pointing towards Russian interference.

While the perpetrators remain unidentified, Volkov reported being attacked multiple times, sustaining injuries including a black eye, bruises, and a fractured bone in his hand.

President Nauseda condemned such acts of violence, affirming Lithuania's defiance against external pressures. The country has been a steadfast supporter of Ukraine since Russia's invasion of its neighbor.
